Bed bug infestations are a continued problem for homes all over the world, and no matter what you may try to do to keep them off of your property, there is no way to ever be 100% certain that your home is bed bug-free.
Keeping bed bugs out of your home is impossible to do without help from a licensed bed bug control professional. However, it can be confusing to understand why it is so easy for bed bug infestations to spread.
Bed bugs do not get into our communities and homes on their own. The only way they can travel is by catching a ride on someone or something. Whether that is on your luggage, clothing, or skin, bed bugs travel into homes from locations where a previous bed bug infestation already existed.
Areas where many people frequently visit, such as airports, school systems, libraries, and work environments are often hotspots for bed bugs to travel from one spot to another.
What are bed bugs?
Adult bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that are similar in size and shape to an apple seed. Bed bug nymphs look similar to adults but are smaller and are transparent white in colour. These insects must feed on the blood of warm-blooded hosts usually humans to survive. Without a host, they will eventually die.
However, depending on the temperature and humidity of the environment they are staying in, they can live from 20 to 400 days without a blood meal.
